To all hall users and the St Boswells community in general, I’m writing about an extension of the upcoming closure of the Greater Hall, due to the need for a thorough repainting after all the floor work is completed – through the Lesser Hall, kitchen and Upper Hall will be freely available during the time that the repainting is going on. Please do get back to me if you have questions!

Underfloor insulation & new flooring. From Monday 5th August until Friday 6th September, the Greater Hall shall be completely closed, and other parts of the building open only in the evening. However, during the daytime we shall do our best to accommodate people who may wish to use the Lesser Hall or the Upper Hall – and we are happy to talk with any interested party about this matter. Underfloor insulation is being retrofitted in the Greater Hall (as part of our ‘greening’ project), which shall involve the laying of a new floor.

Repainting. Given the amount of refurbishment required following the extensive work in the Greater Hall, the management committee has decided that this should go beyond a mere touching-up of the paintwork. To have the Greater Hall at its very best a full repainting should be undertaken. That involves the closure of the Greater Hall being extended until the 19th September (with the whole building fully operational again on the 20th). During this later period (when only painting work is being done) daytime access to the other parts of the building will be quite possible. So the Lesser Hall, Upper Hall etc. shall be available for hire at any time.
We look forward to welcoming you back after the work is finished!

Reasons for the disruption
This unfortunate disruption is due to the hall committee’s ‘greening’ project, which is proceeding well. The next step is to retrofit underfloor insulation in the Greater Hall, which must be done because of the extraordinary amount of energy which is being lost through its existing floor. This is a major enterprise, requiring weeks of work. The existing floor will have to be lifted, so that the insulation can be fitted. A brand new floor will have to be put down – the plan being to fit an attractive beechwood one, laid by a specialist company. The hall’s management committee has undertaken this extensive and ambitious ‘greening’ enterprise to help ‘future proof’ the building – enabling it to continue to function as a vibrant community centre for generations to come. We ask for your patience and understanding during the period in question.
