Jazz and jigs – – Harris Playfair and friends !
St Boswells Village Hall : Saturday 5 April 2025
Harris Playfair, versatile and highly accomplished pianist, hails from the Shetland Islands, where his musical journey began at a young age. Influenced by the rich cultural heritage of his island home, he was introduced to the worlds of jazz and folk by the legendary Shetland musician Peerie Willie Johnson.
Harris now lives in the Scottish Borders and continues his musical explorations combining traditional Scottish and international tunes with jazz and other genres. He performs in many venues, including the Edinburgh Festival, Shetland Folk Festival, Celtic Connections, and in 2024 the Melrose Music Festival.
Harris is joined by Alyn Cosker on drums. Alyn, born and raised in Ayr, is an established drummer, musician and recording artist. He became the regular drummer in the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra. Alyn has worked alongside many professional artists throughout the World and is considered by many to be Scotland’s finest drummer.
Also with Harris will be the bass player Ali Watson. Ali, originally from Thurso, won the Dewar Jazz Award in 2017. Described as “a truly special musician” by his tutors, he is part of the folk-influenced jazz style emerging with younger players in Scotland.
For those who appreciate superb instrumentalists, both in traditional music and jazz, these extraordinary musicians will put on an entertaining ‘not to be missed’ evening in the Borders.
